Lady Scots volleyball team gears up for postseason

Gabriel Keith

Issue date: 11/3/06 Section: Sports
The women's volleyball season is coming to a close as the ladies look optimistically towards the regional playoffs. The season thus far has been a roller coaster of ups and downs. Currently the team is coming off a successful 5-2 record on the road, before that they unfortunately went 1-3 in Iowa at a tournament in Des Moines. Before that they were coming off an impressive 9-1 record.
Going back to the beginning of this year only six girls were on the team for most of preseason, by the end it grew to ten. Yet the first month was almost like a preseason for them since during this time they were getting used to the dynamics of their newly formed team and with just playing with each other.

"The teams that we are afraid of that will provide the stiffest competition, we just saw over the weekend, and from watching them we know we can put together a game plan that can defeat them. It's whether or not the girls can execute it…but I think that they will be able to rise to the challenge," said Head Coach Brian Coffman. It's his second year on the team and first as Head Coach. On October 31, MCC will be hosting their first regional playoff game.

The first Friday in November is the semi-finals, the gauntlet will continue the following Saturday as the beginning of the finals. If they win all three circuits, the team will go on the road to Scottsdale Arizona to compete with twelve teams from other regions all over the United States, all battling for the chance to be crowned national champion.

They will be bringing to the table not one, but two players nationally ranked in the top fifty, Kathi York and Katie Homola. Kathi York, one of the two sophomores on the team, has played just about every game in the last two seasons, both times finishing in the top fifty. This year she has been ranked due to her points per game and hitting percentage, statistically standing out among her piers. Katie Homola, the team's center, is ranked for her assists per game. So, number eight and eleven are the ones to be watched in the upcoming play offs.
