This club meets every Friday night at 7pm in room A115. They watch a film and then start a discussion. So far this semester, they have watched The Matrix, Ghost in the Shell, Adaptation, Closer, Pi and, just last week, Silence of the Lambs.
The meeting on Friday October 27th was a great opportunity for people who had and had not already seen Silence of the Lambs. Members who had seen it several times found new things and new viewers were able to give their fresh opinions on the film. Philosophy was brought up too, of course, and questions were explored like: Why do we tend to sympathize with Hannibal Lecter and almost like him, and what did Clarice's victory say about herself as an FBI agent, a woman and as a person with a troubled past? When you pick apart a movie to its bare core, sometimes your view of it changes entirely.
They (the members) usually plan the movies they watch only one meeting in advance. So, they do not have a semester-long movie list. However, at the next meeting on November 3rd, they will be showing Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Obviously, this club picks serious, controversial films, and you will not find them watching Over the Hedge or Scary Movie 4.
This club has a great group of attendees and the atmosphere is welcoming. It is great to come and voice your opinion about films and philosophy and make connections at school. This club is recommended for anyone who is seeking new friends at school or anyone who thinks they are a major film fanatic.
If you want to find more information about the Philm club or contact its members, your best bet is to check out its MySpace profile at, http://www.mtspace.com/mccphilmclub. If that fails, you can always contact the president of the club, Justine LaRoche, at saveapig@hotmail.com.
