After losing their undefeated record in November, the Fighting Scots recovered quickly win 10 of their last 13 games since. Currently, they are No. 1 in Region 4 District Coaches poll and boasting a 14-4 record. December was a hot for month the Scots, but have cooled down a bit since.
One of the biggest challenges the team overcame with flying colors was slowing down the hottest offense in NJCAA Division II, Blackhawk East on December 20.
Blackhawk had been averaging a record high 110 points until they met up with the Scots. Blackhawk ended the first half with a four-point lead over MCC, but rallied to get ahead by going on a 19-2 point run, leaving their opponents in the dust and winning 97-79. Sophomore Melvin Beasley led the team with 32 points and went 12-17 with free-throw shots.
Freshmen George White added an additional 22 points in MCC's column.
Coming off their big win, the Scots were pumped and ready for victory. South Suburban could not have come at a worst time as MCC again came out on top, winning 57-51 on December 22.
Perhaps falling behind is the Scots' motivational strategy because after trailing seven points by halftime, the team held South scoreless for four minutes until they took the lead. Beasley led the team with the game high 28 points.
January was a slow start for the Scots who lost their first game in a nail biting 61-64 to Carthage College.
They also lost to Moraine Valley, but have still played above .500 ball. Proving that they are worth their No. 1 ranking, MCC massacred Morton Community College on January 17, playing their best game to date.
Morton had prevented MCC from going to nationals in the District Championship game last March, so naturally the Scots' had a score to settle.
The game seemed to have already been won b halftime, as Morton trailed by 10, the closest they would come to MCC.
The Scots had outscored the Panthers 39-20 in the second half, eventually winning 80-51. Beasley, who had injured his hand in the first half, scored 17 points while White scored another 16 points in securing the win.
Even though March is still some time away, MCC is already playing like it's the do or die in the playoffs.
With a relatively healthy team and the advantage six more home games and playing Morton again in February, the team's record does not have to worry about being tainted.
Unfortunately for Morton, the beating will have to be on their home court.
