MCC's book club, The Cheshire Cheese Society, is named for a famous pub in London where some of the greatest literary figures in history used to gather to eat, smoke, drink and talk. As a student literary society, they spend much of their time reading and discussing literary works, but are also very involved in community activities and literacy advocacy. Some of the books they have read and discussed this semester thus far include "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," "The DaVinci Code," "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius," and "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." In addition to readings, they also discuss the creative writing submitted by their members. Some of the society events they have participated in include bowling, attending films, and a summer Harry Potter party. They have elected officials who are all students at MCC, who include Krista Childers (president), Carrie Waghorn (vice-president), Sarah Hannis (public relations), and Helen Gibbs (Secretary).
Currently, the CCS is organizing a book drive. As community literacy advocates and concerned citizens, they have decided to collect new and slightly used children's books to donate to the community's Home of the Sparrow. For those unfamiliar with this particular organization, The Home of the Sparrow is a transitional shelter that houses and supports women and children who are homeless and/or victims of domestic abuse.
On Saturday, December 3rd and Saturday, December 10th, the Cheshire Cheese Society will have a table set up outside Read Between the Lynes, a bookstore located on the square in Woodstock. They will be accepting used books from home, new books purchased inside Read Between the Lynes, and/or monetary donations. Any monetary donations will be brought directly inside Read Between the Lynes by Cheshire Cheese Society members and be used immediately to buy much needed books for those of the community sheltering at Home of the Sparrow. They plan to bring these books to the shelter in time for the holidays, and would even like to wrap some of the new donations and give them as gifts to those who might otherwise receive little or nothing to cheer them. We would really appreciate seeing MCC students and employees there to support the cause - with buckets of hot cocoa if it is as cold as anticipated.
