Issue date: 2/17/05 Section: Sports
With a 16-5 record, there is little doubt that the Fighting Lady Scots' Basketball team will be able to achieve a 20+-win season, a goal achieved many times under Coach Ken Ruud. Along with an impressive winning record this season, the team can also boast being number ranked no. 1 in the Skyway Conference, a 6-0 record against conference teams, an average of 63.2 points a game, and a no. 2 seed in Division II Dist. K rankings.

Home court advantage has definitely been a factor in winning for the team. With 9-2 record at home, visiting opponents like Lake County were completely dominated by the Lady Scots. The Lady Lancers were already in trouble when they were down 19 points during halftime, and with a final score of 77-43, the Lady Scots were able to put away their opponents with ease. Ten players entered the scoring column, with four hitting the double-digit mark. Freshman Caitlin Krombach lead the team, scoring an impressive 17 points, while Sophomore Shelby Horgan and Freshman Meri Niehaus had 11 points apiece, and Freshman Meghan Hammond scored a respectable 10 points.

Another impressive home victory came off of a 69-54 win over Oakton. Although the team struggled at the start of the game, only scoring 12 points the first the minutes, McHenry got back to business, leading 39-27 by halftime. Krombach continued to dominate in the scoring column, shooting an outstanding 19 points. Three other teammates scored double-digit numbers including Sophomore Jackie Plett, 13 points, Niehaus, 12 points, and Horgan, 10 points.

Along with wins, the Scots have seen their share of losses as well. Even with a valiant effort, the team could not overcome Kankakee, with a 65-48 loss at home. The no. 1 ranked team in Dist. D kept McHenry at bay, leading by 18 points at the half. Even with the loss, MCC did not go down without a fight, coming as close as a 5 point deficit in the 4th quarter. Horgan scored 12 points, while Krombach and Plett had 8 points each.
