It's been all about the streaks thus far for MCC Fighting Scots. If it's winning, they feed of the momentum. Even the losses seem to follow each other, but the Scots haven't lost more than 2 games consecutively all year. They come into the end of January with a record of 11-5 and are 2-0 in the Skyway conference. The team has had some close games and has been on both ends of blowouts.
The Scots are lead by freshman forward Melvin Beasly, who has picked up his play and helped the Scots earn their conference wins. Beasley's field goal percentage is among the top players in the district Mike Ferrera has been a solid scorer for the Scots as well, averaging about 15 points per game. He also received honorable mention status on the Division II preseason All-America men's basketball team The Scots also get strong play from David Marshall, Zeb Hall, and Quentin Vaughn. It really has been an all around team effort. Sharing the ball and the accolades is something this close-knit team is happy to do. The team chemistry seems to be strong and Hall has noticed a difference between this team and last year's team. "Last year we stuck together. But this year seven of us are not from this area so we help each other out. We treat each other like brothers." Hall said.
Dewitt is from downstate Sterling and he is one of the players not from the area. But he says the bond between teammates is strong and everyone gets along well. "I came in not knowing anybody," Dewitt said. "Now all these guys are my friends."
Ryan was looking forward to seeing how his team would respond on a trip out of state. They boarded a flight for Fort Myers, Florida where they played two Division-I junior colleges. They lost to Gulf Coast Community College 90-64 and to Chipola Junior College 90-77. "The games were a lot closer than the scores showed," Ryan said. He was expecting to see more "athletic, quicker, and stronger players" from the Division I opponents, and that is exactly what the Scots were up against.
